10 Pillars of Festival Safety
Camping, changing weather, loud music, crowds, and long days can place extra stress on the body and mind.
To help you have a safe, positive experience at Rainbow Spirit and reduce the risk of health issues, please follow our 10 Pillars of Festival Safety:
Conditions can change quickly – from hot sun and dust to cold nights, rain, and mud. Pack for all weather: warm layers, sunscreen, hats, breathable clothing, sturdy footwear, insect repellent, a reliable tent, and appropriate bedding.
If you have a health condition, bring all prescription medications (plus extra), essential items such as insulin, inhalers, EpiPens, or contraception, and consider wearing a medical ID. Bring your own basic First Aid Kit – many medical presentations are for minor issues that can be easily self-managed.
Medics are onsite and we will be offering additional support services, including safe spaces, education, and care.
If you choose to use alcohol or other drugs, do so consciously. Understand the effects, risks, and interactions with medications, weather, sleep, and your health. Stay rested, fed, and hydrated. Using alcohol or other drugs is never without risk.
You are responsible for your body. Know your limits, be gentle with yourself, and avoid pushing beyond them. USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS IS NEVER WITHOUT RISK
If you choose to use alcohol or other drugs:
- Less is often more
- Avoid mixing substances
- Be especially cautious with prescription medications
- Never combine GHB with alcohol or other depressants
Drug contents are unpredictable and may not be what they are sold as. Whenever possible, test your substances – Harm Reduction can provide information.
If someone is unconscious or unresponsive, call medical immediately and place them in the recovery position. Seek help early – it can save lives.
Hydration is essential, but both dehydration and water intoxication are dangerous.
Follow these guidelines:
- Up to 250ml per hour when resting
- Up to 500ml per hour when active/dancing or in hot weather
Alternate water with electrolyte drinks, coconut water, or juices. Alcohol does not count as hydration.
Eating is just as important as drinking. Food provides electrolytes and nutrients needed to maintain balance and prevent water intoxication.
Eat something every few hours, even if you don’t feel hungry. If solid food is difficult, try soup or nutrient-rich drinks. If you feel unwell, seek help early.
Take regular breaks from dancing to avoid overheating. Some substances reduce your awareness of body temperature.
Use shade, rest often, avoid synthetic fabrics, apply cooling to pulse points, and sprinkle yourself with water. Avoid sun exposure if using GHB. Cooling down is essential — even when you don’t feel like stopping.
Multi-day festivals disrupt normal routines. Prioritise sleep, nutrition, hygiene, and rest.
Fatigue and sleep deprivation can lead to physical and mental health crises, including hallucinations. Even short periods of rest each day make a difference. Eat regularly, sleep when you can, and look after yourself to maintain a positive mindset.
If you need help – ask.
Medical staff, festival crew, and support services are here to help without judgement or trouble.
Never leave someone unwell alone. Don’t try to “sleep it off.” If someone is unconscious or unresponsive, call medical immediately and use the recovery position.
Consent must be:
- Active – only “yes” means yes
- Based on equal power – intoxicated or vulnerable people cannot consent
- A choice – free from pressure
- Ongoing – consent can change at any time
Practice safe sex.
Look out for each other. If something feels off, check in and trust your instincts.
Protect your hearing so you can keep enjoying music for years to come.
Use earplugs – available for free at the Info Tent (while stocks last).
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, or while fatigued.
Ensure you are sober, rested, hydrated, and free of drug traces before driving.
Victoria Police conduct roadside testing. Onsite testing services may also be available – ask at the Info Tent for details.
